Day five of the PWA Gran Canaria Wind & Waves Festival delivered more absolutely epic conditions. As the wind rose above fifty knots for the second day in a row and the waves continued to pummel into the bay of Pozo. Iballa Ruano Moreno (Starboard / Severne) created a piece of windsurfing history today, as she became the first person to defeat her sister, Daida Ruano Moreno (Starboard / Severne), in Pozo since 1999. The prize giving ceremony that followed was a hugely emotional affair as the twins celebrated the success of the event as well. Meanwhile, Philip Köster (Starboard / NeilPryde / Maui Ultra Fins), successfully defended his Pozo title by defeating Victor Fernandez (Fanatic / North) in the men’s winners’ final to complete an enthralling day.

It is with sad hearts we tell you that co-inventor of windsurfing passed away. The following was posted on the starboard website in his memory
“Jim Drake changed the lives of millions of people and will continue to do so.
Windsurfing has made people experience the wind, waves and water in new ways. The sport has made converts travel and even settle on the opposite side of our planet.
His spirit was always to include everyone and especially women and kids into windsurfing. Jim and his wife Sam spent years with us in Thailand developing designs and strategies to
increase the popularity of windsurfing. He was always optimistic and especially happy to challenge the status quo. His view on “one design” versus free choice of windsurfing gear
for the Olympics was well known. His designs, like the Formula 175, the worlds most winning race board ever took competitive windsurfing to a new level.Jim was an early adaptor of paddle boarding and he has helped design a number of winning designs like the K15. Some of his later designs are still being tested and his ideas on the future
of paddle board designs may soon be shared. He had so much more to give and reminded us on how precious each hour of life is.”

The PWA have finally confirmed that Pozo will be happening. That’s pretty last minute. but it sounds like they will be making up for it in terms of the event. There will be live streaming through out, and tons of social media coverage! And we of course will bring you up to the date coverage fop the entire event! Check out the the event facebook fanpage at facebook.com/GranCanariaWindWavesFestival.
The biggest news of all however, is that the event will now be run by the Moreno twins. The Moreno twin’s are two of the best female windsurfers, and they intend to bring a fresh new look to the PWA tour stop. They have already re-named it the PWA Pozo Wind & Waves Festival. A strong prediction is the emphasis on growing the event to a scale that is similar to PWA Podersdorf or PWA Sylt.
Some more action from Pozo all filmed from the spy cam Proffitts bedroom!! News includes another doublefest by Marcilo Browne, whingury, new moves and the latest arrivals. Ben promises to bring us a technique section soon!
