In August, I spent a couple of weeks in Turkey preparing and then competing in the PWA world cup in the town of Alacati. In this months episode “The Contest” I try to portray the stuff that happens during a contest, all compressed into a combination of action and talks with two good friends and among the best windsurfers in the world: Ross Williams and Arnon Dagan.
We reflect on everything from arrival to departure and the things that go in between worth talking about. Mixed with some action from the hours spent training and the actual competition moments, I hope that this will give everyone who clicks by to watch an insight of what you go through in an action packed world cup week. Margaret river is cliffs, rocks, sharks and anticipation. Esperance is sand, glory, un-crowds and sunshine. Factor in swell and wind and a German teenager and you have Nti Gravity, our new short with Philip Köster. When you combine his spontaneous style, his aggression on the turns and his sheer joy of sailing, there is still no one else on the planet we would rather watch. 8 hour drives followed by 8 hour sessions; it was hard to get him off the water. On land he can be quiet, on the board he can be brazen. In this WeAreNeverLeaving short we take Köster on a roadtrip along the Western Australian coast looking for sun, swell and trouble. We found two of those things.

After 7 month of windsurfing break due to School and an injury at my foot, I was finally back on the water in July and spent two amazing month on the Canary Island… I put together a small clip with the footage we got. At only 18, Youp’s name is already well engraved in the history of windsurfing, in part, thanks to his unique explosive yet flowing style, his charismatic personality and his multiple world youth freestyle titles.
Raised on a small Caribbean island called Bonaire, known today to be amongst the most competitive in the world, this island gave birth to a multitude of windsurfing legends such as Tonky Frans, Taty Frans and Kiri Thode.
But Youp, who remained as a silent follower is now clearly forging his own path into the spotlight. One year ago he came up with his own clothing label, HeyYoup (heyyoup.com).
He will inspire a whole generation of windsurfers if he remains on track.
Paradise City is a short film and gives you an inside view of Youp’s training grounds. The idea was to show this island paradise from a different perspective then its already famous perfect flat waters. It is time to show the diversity the island offers. One of our crew, Markus, already began filming in January and went with Youp to a few secret places. Later, in May/June, Oli also passed by and took some shots to finish the film.
