RRD’s Firestorm program has seen some changes in the shapes this year. Based on the scooprocker of the X-fire boards, the thinner volume configuration and narrower tail allow the firestorm to have excellent acceleration but comfortable when freeriding.
We’ve riden the older version and it was excellent. Well we haven’t ridden this brand new board, we’ve tested both the firestorm and X-fire, and think it’s safe to say that if you want to drag race your friends and blast around at full speed without the demands of a full on Slalom board this should be near the top of your list.
Sail and rig component manufacture Gaastra has stepped up to the plate with what they call the “ultimate competition boom”. They have 2 sizes for wave and freestyle, along with 3 race sizes each having monocoque one piece carbon tail pieces. All of which became available to the public today.
The Outline curves are optimized based on target sail sizes and the back ends come with different widths for each boom length making for a perfectly integrated rig. The Race back ends comes with a built in pulley system for adjustable outhauls.
Oversized front and tail sections for increased stiffness, reduced diameter in the grip area for increased comfort and ergonomics. A textured grip section in the grip area increases the traction. A stiff mast cup for direct force transmission between the boom and mast makes the connection rock solid. A long closing lever for easy opening and closure while rigging.
The new high tech Gaastra front end is built out of reinforced Plastic for more stiffness, better power load for more performance and lighter weight for better handling.
The new monocoque arms and back ends are built out of the best 100% Carbon quality composite technology. The all new Gaastra molds are produced under extreme heat and pressure to reach the highest level of carbon composite quality.
For all you gear junkies here is Keith Teboul introduces you to the 2013 Thruster LS which replaced the Single Fin from last year. The LS stands for Levi Siver, but that doesn’t mean you have to be pro to ride it, a v bottom helps make it fast and smooth absorbing chop, combined with a fast rocker and pulled in tail to help turning. If you’re looking for your first multi-fin board this would be a great choice.

The Legend remains MauiSails flagship side-shore wave sail. A marginally forward oriented draft provides ease of transition to driving bottom turns to neutral when coming off the top. This ability for control crosses over making it a great sail for gnarly, gusty high wind areas like the Gorge and Pozo.
New for this year, MauiSails is using a exclusive light weight gradient X-Ply in the upper portion of the sail. The gradient X-Ply has excellent strength to weight properties and looks cool in the sun creating a gradient reflection. The material was a result of several years of testing and development.
The legend is available from sizes 2.9 to 6.1. For more information on the legend and the complete MauiSails lineup check out the MaiuSails.com.
