Two MauiSails Head to Head

MauiSails 5 Battern (The Legend & GhostXT) vs 4 Batten (Mutant)

Most major brands have 4 and 5 batten wavesails, but what’s the difference, and which is the right choice for your quiver?

MauiSails sail designer Arthur Szpunar takes a look at MauiSail 2 distinct styles of sideshore wave sails. We have our moderate-low aspect ratio, 5 batten Legend and Ghost lines and the super-low aspect ratio 4 batten Mutant.

5 Batten
The Legend and Ghost both share a classic, neutral feel with a more forward oriented draft. The 5 batten skeleton gives a slightly stiffer and more locked profile compared to a 4 batten. The Legend and Ghost’s balanced, efficient outlines smooth out gusty conditions and allow for easy handling whether slicing up wave faces or blasting in windy bump and jump conditions. Our classic 5 batten outlines versatile nature and smooth character helps them maintain a place in the hearts of many as proven performers.

4 Batten
The Mutants greatest advantage is in maneuverability both on the wave and in the air. The ultra-low aspect ratio, combined with our unique shaping techniques makes the mutant an amazing combination of easily accessible power and acceleration together with incredible mobility in 3D space. The significant power advantage allows the Mutant to be sailed approximately .3 m2 smaller than traditional. The low aspect ratio is especially suitable to the 4 batten outline as it brings the battens closer together as well as lowering the center of effort down, close to the riders body. These factors, combined with our highly refined skin tension give the Mutant excellent wind range and control while maintaining a soft breathable feel. The Mutant provides the magic combination of instant acceleration and drive with radical maneuverability that is necessary for the most progressive modern wave style.

Casey Reher – The young ripper from Maui

Maui born and raised Casey Rehrer has been windsurfing since he could walk and recently decided to get very serious about his windsurfing career so had to make a decision and that decision was to join THE TEAM at MauiSails along with the rest of his family.

“We have all seen Casey grow up and continue to be impressed with his performance on the water, but now we are very excited and honored to have him on our sails and look forward to a long and bright future together” – Phil McGain.

Casey comes from a windsurfing family background, with both parents windsurfing, Tom and Bev who can be seen at Kanaha most days. Casey who is focusing on his studies as well as having the luxury of family support will be able to sail Hookipa most afternoons. Casey will also be competing at some of the event of the American Windsurfing Tour and of course the treasure of all windsurfing events on Maui, the Makani classic later in the year.

The 2014 Loco Pro is a 4 batten freestyle sail by MauiSails, and is the signature sail of Bonaire Freestyle Pro Taty Frans.  A brand new design developed for Taty Frans, but carries over some ideas from the popular Mutant with adaptions for the higher aspect ratio of a freestyle sail, to feel super light and responsive in the hands.  Available in sizes from 4.0 to 5.6.

Check out the video as head sail designer Artur Szpunar walks you through the sail with some action from Taty Frans.

Gear – 2013 MauiSails Legend a side-shore wave sail

The Legend remains MauiSails flagship side-shore wave sail.   A marginally forward oriented draft provides ease of transition to driving bottom turns to neutral when coming off the top.  This ability for control crosses over making it a great sail for gnarly, gusty high wind areas like the Gorge and Pozo.

New for this year, MauiSails is using a exclusive light weight gradient X-Ply in the upper portion of the sail.  The gradient X-Ply has excellent strength to weight properties  and looks cool in the sun creating a gradient reflection.  The material was a result of several years of testing and development.

The legend is available from sizes 2.9 to 6.1.  For more information on the legend and the complete MauiSails lineup check out the MaiuSails.com.
