2013 PWA Freestyle World Cup Brouwersdam

A nice edit from Nico Hauschke featuring footage from the 2013 Brouwesdam PWA Freestyle World Cup in the Netherlands.

The best Freestyle Windsurfers of the PWA World Tour competed on the water and as the wind was increasing in the late afternoon on September 10th they were facing “Freestyle-Storm-Chase” conditions. While it was windy and raining I found a spot inside a garage and got a few shots of the competition and the sailors in their struggle with gusts of 50knots. Check it out! – Nico

PWA NETHERLANDS WORLD CUP – WRAP UP

Kiri Thode finally ends Gollito’s unbeaten run and Sarah-Quita Offringa grabs a straight six.

The return of the PWA to the Netherlands for the first time in fifteen years proved to be a huge success as Brouwersdam produced a superb blend of conditions for the elite of the freestyle world. Anything from storm force winds combined with heavy rain, to glorious evening light with 20 knots and perfect flat water greeted the competitors over the course of the week. Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / Gaastra / Mystic / Chris Benz / Maui Ultra Fins) proved once again that she is in a world of her own as she emphatically claimed her sixth PWA Freestyle world championship in a row. In the meantime Kiri Thode (Starboard / Gaastra) ended the reigning world champions – Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo (Fanatic / North) – unbeaten record, as the Venezuelan tasted defeat for the first time since 2012 – but more importantly Thode claimed the event victory – his first since 2011 – to blow the title race wide open.

Kiri Speaks after clinching victory:

“For sure the wind was pretty light for both of us. I was struggling at times in the middle of the heat but I just tried my best to pop as high as I can. I just tried to stay focused and do whatever I could do to win. I think Steven [van Broeckhoven] sailed a great heat too. I don’t know what it is but every time it’s the first time an event is held I seem to win, just like in Vietnam in 2011. For sure I’m really really happy!”

PWA NETHERLANDS WORLD CUP – Day 4

The battle continues as Brouwersdam produces the perfect freestyle conditions

Having played the waiting game for much of the morning and early afternoon on day four of the DAM7 PWA Netherlands World Cup, Brouwersdam burst into life to deliver several hours of perfect freestyle conditions, as winds of 20-25 knots combined with flat water created the ultimate windsurfing playground – which head judge Duncan Coombs described as the best conditions of the year – for the contortionists of the windsurfing world. The competition for the day was eventually concluded just before 8:20pm as fading light brought an end to the explosive proceedings. The men’s fleet has been whittled down to the remaining top three sailors – Kiri Thode (Starboard / Gaastra), Tonky Frans (Tabou / Gaastra), both of whom didn’t sails today, and Steven Van Broeckhoven (JP / NeilPryde / Different) who held off the strong challenge of the reigning world champion Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo (Fanatic / North) – whilst only the top four ladies remain in the women’s fleet – Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / Gaastra / Mystic / Chris Benz / Maui Ultra Fins), Yoli de Brendt (Fanatic / North), Arrianne Aukes (RRD / Simmer / Maui Ultra Fins) and Olya Raskina (JP / NeilPryde)
